DI Resident Co-Produces Film With Selena Gomez, Debuts Sept. 24
Filed Under: Articles       ♥      Share:
BOLD Entertainment’s feature film “This Is The Year” is set for a theatrical and video-on-demand release on Friday, Sept. 24.

The coming-of-age dramedy is David Henrie’s directorial debut. Executive producers are Daniel Island resident and entrepreneur Denis Gallagher along with Henrie’s longtime friend and former co-star on “Wizards of Waverly Place,” Selena Gomez. Daniel Island resident Doug Coupe, a colleague of Gallagher’s at BOLD Entertainment, is one of the film’s producers as well.

“I’m excited that we’ve partnered with Vertical Entertainment and MarVista Entertainment for the worldwide release of our film ‘This Is The Year,’” stated Gallagher, chairman of BOLD Entertainment, headquartered on Daniel Island at hub130 on River Landing Drive. “The team at Endeavor Content put a lot of work into getting these deals done which we appreciate. David Henrie did a great job with his directorial debut and Selena’s input on the film was very helpful. We are looking forward to seeing it hit big screens this month. I think everyone is ready for a feel-good film for the entire family.”

“BOLD Entertainment was a dream to work with,” Henrie stated. “Their whole team, under the leadership of Denis, has such an infectious sense of optimism that you can’t help but be the best you can be around them. They make you better at what you do, and I’ll never be able to express how grateful I am to Denis, Doug and the team.”

“This Is The Year” is a contemporary spin on many of the classic 1980s movies that resonated with that era’s youth. It aims to address the issues facing teens today – high school friendships, romances, escapades, change — speaking their language and breaking through with a meaningful story. The film stars Lorenzo James Henrie

(“Fear the Walking Dead”), Vanessa Marano (“Switched at Birth”), Bug Hall (“Little Rascals”), Alyssa Jirrels (“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”), Jake Short (“A.N.T. Farm”), with Jeff Garlin (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) and Gregg Sulkin (“Runaways”).

“The trailer for the film, which dropped recently, has been well-received and gaining a lot of traction from not only David’s and Selena’s fans, but from so many people seeking an outlet to go on a fun-filled journey featuring good times, great music and powerful, relevant themes,” said former actor turned producer Coupe. He added that both David and Lorenzo Henrie have frequented Daniel Island on numerous occasions and love the island.

In the film, in a last-ditch effort to win over the girl of his dreams, a nerdy high school senior (Lorenzo Henrie) and his best friends embark on a road trip to see their favorite band at the hottest music festival of the year only to discover true love in the most unexpected place.

“Getting to work with some of my old ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ co-stars was wonderful, we brought some of that magic to this film in a major way and we can’t wait to have people feel that,” Henrie added. “As the director, the main challenge was to try and maintain a spirit of creativity and optimism on set that allowed every single person to feel empowered to be the best they could be to serve the overall story and I believe we achieved that goal.”

The film initially debuts theatrically in 10 of the top 20 markets nationwide and broadens out after the Sept. 24 release. DI residents and others in the greater Charleston area can watch the film on major platforms such as Apple, Amazon, Google, Vudu/Fandango, Redbox On Demand, Comcast, DirecTV, Dish, Spectrum, and Verizon.

Locals can attend a private, red carpet showing at the Terrace Theater on James Island on Friday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. For tickets, email

Selena Gomez Just Told the Story Behind Her Self-Tanner Mishap At The 2018 Met Gala
Filed Under: Articles       ♥      Share:

Beauty fails happen to everyone, even Hollywood A-listers like Selena Gomez. She recently opened up about the drama surrounding her overly-bronzed tan complexion at the 2018 Met Gala. While sharing her nightly makeup routine for Vogue‘s Beauty Secrets, she looked back on “a funny story about a little self-tanner.”

The Only Murders in the Building star said, “For the Met Gala, I was getting ready, and we wanted to add some color. So [I] put on some of this tanning lotion, and it looked really beautiful and very even.” She continued, “As the evening kept going on, it was getting a little darker and darker.”

Things took a drastic turn when she finally realized how bad things had gotten. “I look at a photo of myself when I sit down, and I am completely orange. I was like, ‘This is going to be terrible because I’m going to get eaten alive about this.'”

Instead of totally freaking out, Selena decided to make light of it. “So I had my security take a video of me because my first reaction was just to get the hell out of there,” she said. “And so I’m running to my car. I’m literally just hauling a** to my car and then gonna put it online. I was saying this is my reaction after seeing my Met Gala photos.”

True to her word, she posted a cryptic video showing her running away from her Met Gala photos hours later. “Me when I saw my pictures from MET 🤷🏽‍♀️,” she captioned the post.

Selena Gomez Shines In ‘Only Murders In The Building’
Filed Under: Articles, Only Murders In The Building       ♥      Share:

Hulu‘s Only Murders in the Building is a satire, a mystery, and a loving portrait of three strangers becoming unlikely friends. Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez star as the strangers-turned-sleuths-turned-besties, and while folks are used to seeing comedy titans Martin and Short working together, Gomez’s casting feels like a curveball. The millennial celebrity, known for her singing, acting, producing, beauty line, and social media savvy, isn’t the first name you might associate with her seventy-something co-stars. But that’s sort of the magic of Selena Gomez in Only Murders in the Building. The actress more than holds her own against Martin and Short, proving that she has the talent and charisma to outlast trends and evolve into the future.

Only Murders in the Building is based on an idea that Steve Martin has been working on for years, although the original concept was for three aging “Broadway” actors. “The idea came almost immediately, that they lived in a building and they all were interested in crime. But they didn’t have the energy to go downtown, so they would only do murders in the building,” Martin told The New York Times. In the intervening years, however, the project changed. Martin Short suggested that the two of them could do it, but the question remained: who would be the third star? Concerned that adding a third older actor to the mix would make the top three leads seem too similar, Martin and his co-writer John Hoffman came up with the concept of Gomez’s Mabel, a young, street-smart woman who crashes into Charles (Steve Martin) and Oliver (Martin Short)’s uniquely Upper West Side world.

Mabel might bring a jolt of youth and sarcasm to Charles and Oliver’s world, but Gomez comes across as a truly timeless talent like never before in Only Murders in the Building. Selena Gomez has always had the kind of career that has been tied to key pop culture moments, whether we’re talking about her work as a pint-sized child actor on Barney and Friends or her transition to full-on global pop star. Her creative choices — moving from the squeaky-clean world of Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place to Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers — have often run parallel with the experiences of her own audience as they’ve grown up. Heck, she even took the universal challenge of being homebound during COVID-19 to launch her innovative “at home” cooking show, Selena + Chef.

The Return Of Selena
Filed Under: Articles       ♥      Share:

Selena Gomez’s favorite place to chill is her glam room. A small space on the ground floor of her new L.A.-area house, it opens onto a stone patio surrounding an amoeba-shaped pool. Inside, there’s a hair and makeup station stocked with products from her Rare Beauty line; racks of clothes for her cooking show, Selena + Chef; a selection of shoes on a shoebox dais; a green velvet couch; a couple of salon chairs; a large-screen TV; a mini-fridge; and a snack station. Gomez meets me there dressed in a fuzzy light gray sweater, black leggings, and white sneakers, her hair pulled back into a ponytail. She, her roommates, and her maternal grandparents—who lived with her prior to quarantine—spend a lot of time down here watching basketball and hanging out.

Gomez moved into the house shortly before the pandemic, having recently sold two previous homes. “I tried out a bunch of different neighborhoods because I wanted to know what was going to make me feel comfortable in a city that doesn’t make me feel that comfortable,” she says. “I was like, ‘Oh, maybe I’ll try West Hollywood,’ but I was like, ‘No, that’s not my vibe.’ Then I moved to Calabasas, and I thought that would be nice and family-oriented, but it’s actually very overwhelming and trendy now. It took me a while to figure out what was best for me.”

The house she finally settled on has a cozy, eclectic, collective vibe—kind of like a ski chalet, or a sorority. “I’m a very communal person,” Gomez says. “I find happiness when I’m with people I love.” Considering the challenges she has faced in the past decade, it’s hardly surprising that she feels most at home surrounded by close family and friends. “My lupus, my kidney transplant, chemotherapy, having a mental illness, going through very public heartbreaks—these were all things that honestly should have taken me down,” she says. Gomez speaks slowly and calmly, in a surprisingly low and uninflected register. “Every time I went through something, I was like, ‘What else? What else am I going to have to deal with?’ ” “ ‘You’re going to help people,’ ” she told herself. “That’s really what kept me going. There could have been a time when I wasn’t strong enough, and would have done something to hurt myself.”

To say the past decade has been hard for Gomez is a massive understatement. But it’s also been incredibly generative. During the pandemic, while most of us were eating Double Stuf Oreos all day in our pajamas, Gomez was busy shooting the new Hulu show Only Murders in the Building (her first series-regular role since Wizards of Waverly Place). Starring alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short, Gomez, who is also an executive producer, plays Mabel, a lonely young woman who lives in a luxury Upper West Side apartment building. When a resident is found murdered, she meets her neighbors and fellow true-crime fans Charles and Oliver (Martin and Short), and the three of them decide to investigate and create their own podcast, mostly as an excuse to spend time together.

When Only Murders started shooting last November, Gomez was excited, but COVID protocols made it stressful. “No one was allowed to be on set. Everybody wore masks and shields. If I touched a prop, they cleaned it,” she says. For a kissing scene, she was required to wash her mouth out with Listerine after each take—7 to 10 of them. “It burned my mouth. I was like, ‘I want to throw up.’ I’ve never experienced a set like that.”

Selena Gomez Calls The Good Fight’s Kidney Transplant Joke ‘Tasteless,’ Thanks Fans For Having Her Back
Filed Under: Articles       ♥      Share:

Not laughing. Selena Gomez reacted to The Good Fight poking fun at her kidney transplant after the show received backlash from the singer’s fans.

“I am not sure how writing jokes about organ transplants for television shows has become a thing but sadly it has apparently,” the former Disney Channel star, 29, wrote via Twitter on Tuesday, August 3. “I hope in the next writer’s room when one of these tasteless jokes are presented it’s called out immediately and doesn’t make it on air.”

The Wizards of Waverly Place alum gave her devoted followers a shout-out as well, after they rallied around her in the wake of the controversial joke.

“My fans always have my back. LOVE YOU,” she added. Gomez then shared a link to an organ donor page, asking people to “please sign up” if they are able.

The Paramount+ series made headlines after fans slammed the show for mentioning Gomez’s 2017 kidney transplant during the fourth episode of season 5, during a scene about cancel culture.

During the aforementioned episode, a streaming executive (played by Wayne Brady) asks Liz Reddick (Audra McDonald) to do a sensitivity read on a client. The conversation leads to the characters discussing cancel culture, and what should be off-limits.

A character named Jim (Ifádansi Rashad) kicks things off, suggesting, “Um, necrophilia?” might be a taboo topic to joke about. “No, that could be funny,” Marissa quips (Sarah Steele). “Autism,” Jay (Nyambi Nyambi) fires back.

Jim then counters with, “Selena Gomez’s kidney transplant.”

The 28-year-old singer revealed that she’s always felt “less than in past relationships” and “never really felt equal” to her significant others in a Saturday cover story for Vogue Australia.

The Disney Channel alumna’s love life has received widespread media coverage following her high-profile relationships with Justin Bieber, whom she dated on and off from 2010 to 2018, and the Weeknd, whom she dated in 2017. She’s also been linked to Nick Jonas and Zedd.

“I think most of my experiences in relationships have been cursed,” Gomez said. “I’ve been way too young to be exposed to certain things when I was in relationships.”
