Los Angeles, Nov 18 (IANS) Singer Selena Gomez says her mental health story was twisted a lot, which made her angry.
In an interview with her mother Mandy Teefey for the newsletter The Newsette, Selena opened up about going public with her mental health struggles, reports eonline.com.
“For me, I had to give up social media, so I would go through these periods when I wouldn’t (use my accounts),” she said.
The singer-actress continued: “But I got so angry that my story was twisted into so many different things. The first time I posted (again), I was like, ‘I claim my own story, so if you don’t hear it from me, then it’s not true’. Did I go and get help? Yes I did. But I’m not ashamed. I feel better and I feel like I can understand a lot of things now.’”
“I think that was my moment when I knew (nobody) was going to take my story away from me. And I really do believe that I made the circle, if you will, of making the media look like s**t if they’re making fun of someone who has mental health issues,” Selena added.
In April this year, Selena joined pop star Miley Cyrus in an Instagram Live and shared that she is bipolar. She has also said that she wants to use her voice to raise awareness about the illness.
With today’s release of her first Spanish language single in nearly a decade, ‘De Una Vez,’ Selena Gomez is sharing a new side of herself. The song’s title roughly translates to “at once,” and within the lyrics, Gomez delves into themes that are all too relatable. Heartache and spiritual growth have always made for great songs, and the tale told through ‘De Una Vez’ has resonance no matter what language you speak. “[It’s] such a beautiful song and I think it has a very powerful meaning behind it for anyone who has had their heart broken,” says Gomez. “We all have the pain and the scars from various experiences we go through in life, but it’s really how we heal ourselves. Not only is it about leaving the past behind and forgiveness, but more importantly, it’s also about strength, moving forward, and starting your next chapter.”
As the song pushes Gomez into new territory, she wanted the corresponding visuals to be impactful. The project needed to be handled by directors with a deep connection to the material. “If I was going to completely immerse myself into a project inspired by Latin culture, I wanted to work with native Spanish speaking creators,” says Gomez. Husband and wife team Tania Verduzco and Adrian Perez, a.k.a. Los Perez, proved ideal creative collaborators. Hailing from Mexico and Spain, respectively, the versatile pair met while studying film in Barcelona and have in the last decade created commercials for everything from Pepsi to Candy Crush. To tell the story of ‘De Una Vez,’ they sought to create an emotional journey. “We thought that the song had a sincere and personal message, more of the woman than the artist,” says Verduzco. “We had to bring that to light [because] it’s a song about a mature woman healing a wound, leaving the past behind, and entering into a new chapter.”

Earlier this year, Selena Gomez fans enjoyed a sweet treat from the star. She teamed up with Korean pop group Blackpink to release the chart-topping hit “Ice Cream,” but there was so much more that went into the collaboration.
Prior to the drop, Gomez became an owner and investor in the popular New York City-based ice cream brand Serendipity. In the months leading up to the song’s premiere, Gomez thought there was no better way to celebrate than with a new ice cream flavor inspired by the single. This was how Serendipity’s Cookies and Cream Remix featuring pink vanilla ice cream and thick black fudge swirls with cream-filled cookie pieces came to life.
Imagine being in the office when this exciting partnership was announced. To let us in on exactly everything that went on behind-the-scenes, Forbes did a joint interview with Gomez herself and CEO of Serendipity Brands, Mark Smolin. The duo gave us the complete rundown with Smolin mentioning how Gomez and her team were a breeze to work with while the musician turned ice cream connoisseur couldn’t help express her excitement about how the campaign played out.
It’s clear that Gomez has a true vision for her involvement with the company and this is because she’s always been a fan of the iconic brand. We have no doubt there’s so much more to come, but until then, scroll through the exciting Q&A ahead and not grab a pint of the frozen dessert while you’re at it? Gomez’s flavor may have dropped over the summer, but it’s still available online and in select stores across the country.
Isis Briones: How did the amazing idea of a new flavor come about?
Mark Smolin: “Selena helped us devise the flavor. Selena’s great, she has a ton of vision and she’s a long-time fan of the restaurant. We worked with her on the flavor we had and she modified it, which we really did in a matter of several weeks. The pink ice cream is a blend of vanilla ice cream with pink flavored coloring, so that’s how we got the pinkness. The black, we have the fudge swirls, and the chocolate cookies in there work to make a black and pink combination.”

Selena Gomez has hinted she will have lots of new music arriving in 2021 and has vowed to top her 2020 album ‘Rare’
Selena Gomez has teased that she has “a whole little vessel of good things coming” in 2021.
The 28-year-old superstar has reflected on the challenging past 12 months amid the coronavirus pandemic and admitted that despite her success with her comeback album, ‘Rare’, her first full-length release since 2015’s ‘Revival’, it has been a “bittersweet” year.
However, she is touched that so many felt uplifted by her music during these unprecedented times.
In an interview with Billboard, she said: “There’s this bittersweet feeling, of course.
“I would much rather the world be in a better place. Yet at the same time, it was so beautiful to see that my music could hopefully bring some people some sort of joy in the midst of it.
“It’s nice to know that ‘Rare’ became what it became for me.”
The ‘Ice Cream’ singer has vowed to push the bar even higher on her next record as she hinted there will be lots more new material from her in 2021.
She continued: “And obviously I would like to say that it was the best album that I’ve released so far. But that doesn’t mean that I’m not gonna challenge myself for the next.”
And when quizzed on what her plans for next year are, she teased that she has “a whole little vessel of good things coming!”
The ‘Lose You To Love Me’ singer has been busy penning hits in lockdown in her own makeshift studio.
Meanwhile, the former Disney star recently admitted she’s “always dreamt” of doing a song with Taylor Swift.
Selena would love to collaborate with her best friend, who she describes as “family”.
She said: “I’ve always dreamt of doing a song with Taylor. We both wanted to do that. It just feels like we’re family … she’s been my best friend. But we’ve talked about it for sure.”
Selena Gomez is back out there dating here and there, E! and Entertainment Tonight confirmed after the singer was seen out with NBA player Jimmy Butler multiple times last month. But she is still very much single and not rushing into anything, ET’s source said in a report published this week. The source added that Gomez has a specific idea of the kind of guy she wants to date, too.
“The qualities that stand out to her in terms of a potential boyfriend are confident, supportive, smart, funny, trustworthy, and reliable,” the outlet’s source said.
ET’s source confirmed that yes, Butler is still a contender for that role, but he’s no lock-in. “Selena has enjoyed hanging out with Jimmy, but she is keeping her options open in terms of guys,” the source said. “She is comfortable dating, but also comfortable being single. She’s not rushing into anything whatsoever.”
“Selena is focusing on what makes her happy and what feels good to her—whether that’s a relationship or not,” the source finished.
ET’s report echoes what E! was told on December 1 about Gomez’s love life. E!’s source said that Butler and Gomez had gone on a “few” dates at that point.
“[She is] keeping her options open but has been on a few dates with Jimmy and thinks he’s a great guy,” the source said. “They hung out a few times while Selena was in New York City. Jimmy asked her to go to dinner and they had a great time. It’s very casual and she’s open to seeing where things go, but isn’t settling down just yet.”

According to The Wrap, a spokesperson for the broadcaster explained that it was “never our intention to make light” of the ‘Ice Cream’ singer’s health, having been criticised on social media recently.
The spokesperson also added revealed that the network has been in touch with Gomez’s team and will be making a donation to her charity, The Selena Gomez Fund for Lupus Research at USC.
During the episode in question, the teenage students at Bayside High School have their phones confiscated and in their boredom, they start wondering aloud about all sorts of pop culture subjects.
In one scene, two characters argue in the hallway about who donated a kidney to Gomez back in 2017, two years after she revealed she had been diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disease.

Selena Gomez doesn’t like birthdays. When we talk, her 28th is only days away. “I’m not really good with birthdays,” she says, waving her hand as if to shoo them away. Selena (with all due respect to her and the Allure copy desk, let’s just call her by her first name here) has left the party-planning to a handful of friends she’s been seeing during the pandemic. “I don’t know, it just feels like maybe something like 30 should be celebrated. Turning 28 is weird,” she says. In Selena’s defense, nothing about this year feels celebratory for anyone.
